Ernst Reijseger – “In Search of a Hospitable Place”

18 Oct

One of my favorite parts of Werner Herzog’s 2004 documentary The White Diamond is the breathtaking, world-influenced music composed by Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger. Reijseger worked with Senegalese singer Mola Sylla to create the score, which was put out on an album titled Requiem for a Dying Planet. I’ve read that Herzog gave minimal instruction to the musicians on what he wanted to hear telling them things like “Make space”. The result is a very meditative, transcendent piece that compliments the film’s themes of flight and man’s isolated relationship with nature.
